Ancient DNA, shipwrecks, silver, amber and even fish bones are revealing how people, goods and ideas moved across medieval Europe's northern sea.
Imagine finding a thousand-year-old fish bone in Germany.
It looks insignificant.
But scientists analyse its DNA and discover that the fish
came from the Arctic coast of Norway.
Now imagine finding a human skeleton in Poland whose teeth
suggest that the person grew up somewhere hundreds of kilometres away.
Or a glass bead in Scandinavia whose chemical composition
points to glass originally made in the Mediterranean world.
Suddenly, these aren't isolated archaeological objects.
They are travel records.
No medieval merchant wrote down the journey of that fish. No
sailor left a shipping manifest for the glass. No chronicler recorded the
childhood of the person buried in that grave.
Yet the evidence remains.
And when these clues are put together, they reveal a
surprising picture of medieval Europe. The Baltic Sea was not separating
different peoples. It was connecting them.
A Sea That Was Always Moving
The first surprise is that even the Baltic itself was
changing.
The coastline of the medieval Baltic was not exactly the
coastline we know today. Rivers carried sediment into lagoons, channels
changed, and the land itself was still responding to the disappearance of the
enormous Scandinavian ice sheet.
Consider Truso, a major trading settlement on the
southern Baltic.
When it flourished during the Viking Age, the waterways
around Lake Drużno were connected to the Baltic and accessible to ships. Over
time, sediment gradually changed the landscape and the waterways became
increasingly restricted.
The same forces affected other Baltic harbours.
In northern Scandinavia, the land is still rising as the
Earth's crust slowly recovers from the weight of the Ice Age glaciers.
The sea also had its own climate history.
Sediments from the Baltic show changes in temperature,
oxygen levels and water conditions. During warmer periods, the deeper Baltic
could become severely depleted of oxygen.
Climate therefore influenced the conditions in which
medieval sailors operated.
But climate did not create the Baltic network by itself.
People did.
The Highway Was Bigger Than the Sea
The Baltic's greatest advantage was not simply its
coastline.
It was its rivers.
The Oder and Vistula carried traffic deep into Central
Europe. Farther east, the Neva, Lake Ladoga and Volkhov connected the Baltic to
the great river systems of Eastern Europe.
From there, routes could lead towards the Black Sea and
Byzantium, or south-east towards the Volga and the Caspian.
A journey therefore did not have to be one long voyage
across open water.
It could be a combination of sailing, river travel and short
land crossings.
The islands made the system even more practical.
Gotland, almost in the centre of the Baltic, provided a
natural stopping point for ships crossing the sea. Bornholm and Öland offered
similar opportunities.
This created a chain of ports, islands and rivers
linking very different parts of Europe.
And medieval sailors knew how to exploit it.
Around the end of the ninth century, the traveller Wulfstan
sailed from Hedeby towards Truso and described a journey of seven days and
nights. Experimental archaeology suggests that such a voyage was entirely
plausible for a suitable sailing ship under favourable conditions.
These were not people stumbling blindly across an unknown
sea.
They knew their routes.
What Was Moving Across the Baltic?
Some of the cargoes were predictable.
Amber from the southern Baltic travelled far beyond
the region.
Silver came north in enormous quantities. Islamic
dirhams reached Scandinavia through the eastern river routes, and the great
silver hoards of Gotland demonstrate the scale of this movement.
The famous Spillings Hoard alone contained roughly 67
kilograms of silver.
But then archaeology gives us something unexpected.
Fish.
Ancient DNA from cod bones found at Viking Age Hedeby has
shown that some of the fish originated in Arctic waters around northern Norway,
including the Lofoten region.
Think about the logistics.
A fish caught in the far north was preserved, loaded onto a
vessel, carried south and eventually eaten at a settlement in another part of
Europe.
Long-distance trade was not only about luxury goods.
It could supply everyday food.
And that tells us something about the scale of the network.
The People Were Moving Too
Objects can travel without their owners.
A Scandinavian sword found in a Slavic settlement does not
necessarily mean a Scandinavian warrior lived there. The weapon could have been
traded, captured or inherited.
So archaeologists have turned to something much harder to
fake:
the chemistry of the human body.
Certain isotopes in teeth reflect the environment in which a
person grew up. By comparing these chemical signatures with geological
patterns, researchers can sometimes identify people who were raised somewhere
other than where they were eventually buried.
At Bodzia in central Europe, isotope evidence suggests that
some individuals buried in elite graves came from outside the local region,
including people with connections to Scandinavia and eastern Europe.
Ancient DNA adds another layer.
A major 2025 study analysing hundreds of ancient genomes
found evidence of large-scale population movement associated with the spread of
Slavic populations across parts of Central and Eastern Europe during the sixth
to eighth centuries.
That matters because historians have long debated whether
the spread of Slavic languages and culture was mainly the result of migration
or cultural adoption.
The genetic evidence suggests that substantial migration
was involved.
But DNA has limits.
It can tell us about ancestry and population movement.
It cannot tell us what language someone spoke or how they
understood their own identity.
That requires archaeology, history and linguistics alongside
genetics.
The Vikings Didn't Invent This Network
There is another detail that is easy to miss.
People were moving around the Baltic before the Viking
Age.
Research on the Masłomęcz group, associated with the
Wielbark cultural world, has found considerable genetic diversity during the
second to fourth centuries CE, including connections with Scandinavian, Baltic
and more southerly populations.
So the Viking Age was not the moment when the Baltic
suddenly became connected.
It was a period when an older network became much more
intense.
New ships and sailing techniques expanded its possibilities.
Growing trading centres concentrated commerce.
Political powers competed to control routes.
And the demand for silver, luxury goods and human captives
created powerful incentives for long-distance movement.
The Vikings were not the creators of a connected Baltic.
They were among its most effective users.
A Highway for Merchants—and Raiders
There is a darker side to this story.
The same waterways that carried merchants also carried
warriors.
The same networks that moved silver and amber were used in
the trafficking of enslaved people.
And the archaeological evidence sometimes reveals the
violence directly.
At Salme, on the Estonian island of Saaremaa,
archaeologists discovered two boats containing the remains of more than 40
Scandinavian warriors. They had died violently during an encounter in the
eastern Baltic.
The Baltic therefore connected communities without
necessarily bringing them together peacefully.
A prosperous harbour was valuable precisely because it
controlled movement.
A river was valuable because it opened a route inland.
And a successful trading centre could become a target.
Trade and warfare were not separate systems.
They were often two sides of the same network.
What the Baltic Reveals About Medieval Europe
For a long time, it was tempting to imagine medieval Europe
as a collection of separate worlds: Scandinavians in the north, Slavs in the
east, Germans in the west, Balts around the Baltic coast.
The evidence is making that picture harder to sustain.
The people were moving.
So were the goods.
And so were technologies, food, ideas and cultural
practices.
A piece of amber could travel hundreds of kilometres.
Islamic silver could reach Scandinavia.
Arctic cod could end up in Germany.
A person born far from where they were buried could become
part of another society.
And a piece of glass might preserve evidence of a journey
stretching from the Mediterranean world to the Baltic.
Modern science is allowing us to follow these movements in
ways medieval writers never could.
A DNA sequence.
A chemical signature.
A tree ring.
A fish bone.
A layer of sediment on the seabed.
Each is a tiny fragment of evidence.
But together they reveal something much larger:
medieval Europe was far more mobile and interconnected
than its modern map suggests.
The Baltic was not the edge of Europe.
It was one of its great highways.
